QUIZ: Which evolved first, grass or flowers?

New idea for a post, hopefully it’ll be short, sweet and subversive. It’s kind of a two-parter. Part 1 is a quiz, multiple choice, and Part 2 is the explanation of the quiz. Below is the quiz. Take a moment to complete it, then come back tomorrow to find out why I put you through all this!

Feel free to leave comments that expand upon your answer, but give spoiler warnings for folks who might still want to guess blind.

  1. I always hate these questions- You might assume that the obvious answer is “grass,” because it’s simpler and more common (or appears to be). But the fact that the question is even being asked, throws doubt on that first thought.

  2. Would grass be an early form of flowering plants? I thought early grass forms were found dating back 65 mya or something like that.

  3. As already noted, grasses are flowering plants. They weren’t the first flowering plants, though, so flowers came first. I think both are late Mesozoic, and a cursory look at the always reliable Wikipedia confirms this.
