REVIEW: Welcome to the Greenhouse

It’s summertime and it’s hot out! That means academics get to read for fun. I think that’s true for most jobs too, so I figured I’d talk about the book I finally managed to finish now that classes are done.

I mentioned Welcome to the Greenhouse in a previous post, so I guess in some ways this is a follow up but I couldn’t say much about the product before other than that it had a cool concept. By way of a reminder, the book is an anthology of short fiction by sci-fi scribes centered around the idea of global climate change.

R you ready for this? Statistics for free!

If you’ve listened to the show for a while or if you’ve been reading the paleocave blog from the beginning (like when we actually used to update it regularly), then you might know that I’m rather fascinated with statistics. Imagine my delight a few years ago when I found out that one of the most powerful statistical tools available (the one that most of the cool kids use) was available for free! That tool is called R.  It’s a great tool but a terrible name.  R is named both for the developers Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka (Robert and Ross), and as a sort of pun because it was an open source rewrite of the S language. That’s cool, I guess, but R as a name is horrible search engine optimization. Oh well, keeps out the riff-raff I suppose.

The vast majority of people would call R a programming language. Real computer programmers (the kind of people that argue about Ruby vs Perl) will tell you it’s not really a ‘language,’ it’s a ‘programming environment.’ Whatever, I don’t think I really know the difference.  Don’t get intimidated, because it’s pretty easy to do as much or as little as you want in R.

BEER REVIEW: GUBNA Imperial IPA

Per my previous post, I’m not gonna put beer reviews up on the blog for a while. If you’re curious why, click-through the link. If you just wanna read my thoughts concerning an old favorite beer, continue on. As in my last post about beer, I’ll be using the rating system devised by Beer Advocate, where this review was originally posted.

Science… sort of Florida Meetup of 2011!

Hey Paleoposse,

Jacob was feeling lonely and said we should do some sort of meetup down south so he can make friends and leave the house for something other than work. I said sure and offered to drive all way down to Florida so provide double the incentive for all the Paleoposse to come out for a night of drinks, science, and burgeoning friendships. Would you like some details? You can have them!

New Job, New Town, No Time

A wise man once said to me,

There are only 3 kinds of friends: Moving friends, Airport friends, and Beer friends.  And the latter is debatable.

Truer words have ne’er been spoken.  And though I’ve said it before, I consider the members of the Paleoposse to be my friends… MOVING friends, even.

So…speaking of moving… are you guys free Saturday?

It’s not that far.  See? Only 2 cm on the map!

OK, OK, don’t get all nervous, I’m kidding.  Luckily, I already managed the move (with the help of a few friends – paid in beer and pizza), and am about to start my 3rd week of work at my new job in Jacksonville, FL.  Incidentally, you may have noticed that I haven’t made any blog posts in 3 weeks.  COINCIDENCE?

Today I would just like to send a shout out to any PaleoPosse members in North Florida (and even Georgia & Alabama), and see if anyone would be interested in a meet-up! Depending on where everyone is hailing from, we could meet in Jacksonville, Gainesville, or Savanna.

Shoot me an email at jacob@sciencesortof.com and let’s do this!

Reposting Rowe

Our guest on the show this week (Episode 80) was Dr. Christie Rowe who had a contentious interaction with Simon Winchester about a fear-mongering seismology article he’d written. She gave us permission to repost her letters and his responses for your enjoyment. So do just that, enjoy.

Someone at io9 must be listening…

As mentioned in Episode 74 I mentioned that one of the sites I frequent for potential show topics and my own amusement is i09. I encourage listeners to scope it out as long as they still come back here for their science podcasting fix. My reason for mentioning this at all is that recently I mentioned that scientists rarely experiment on themselves and that animal testing is a necessary fact of life for certain types of biologist. Well the good folks at io9 have compiled top 10 lists related to each subject. Enjoy perusing them as I did then go leave us an iTunes review or something else productive.

Top 10 Scientists Who Experimented On Themselves

Top 10 Animals That Made Significant Contributions to Research

Airport Science

Hullo, hullo PaleoPosse… *yawn*…

I’m sitting at Orlando International Airport right now, trying to sneak onto a flight that might have an empty seat, and I figured I’d brighten your day and mine with a little bit-o-AIRPORT SCIENCE!!

Incheon International Airport in South Korea

I’ve told you before how Jet Engines work, and how Stealth Technology works, so today I thought I’d give you a quick lesson on how airports work, from the pilots’ perspective.
